The Program "Engineering Digital Futures" (EDF) is involved in numerous third-party funded projects and maintains a strong network with national and international partners. On this page you can find an overview of selected highlight projects, collaborations and partners of the program:

National funding

The Computational and Mathematical Modeling Program (CAMMP) brings together students and faculty from both high schools and university to introduce the basics of computational modeling through hands-on exploration.
DAQC aims at the construction of a digital-analogue quantum computer to be coupled with supercomputers as a computation accelerator.
HIBALL focuses on the interaction between neuroscience and artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning, to build highly detailed 3D models of the brain at the cellular level.
As part of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the NFDI4ING consortium aims to develop, disseminate, standardise and provide methods and services to make engineering research data FAIR.
NFDI4Chem is an initiative to build an open and FAIR infrastructure for research data management in chemistry.
The NFDI-MatWerk focuses on the research area Materials Science & Materials Engineering and addresses the central challenge of digitally representing materials and their relevant process and loading parameters.
The prime goal of PUNCH4NFDI is the setup of a federated and "FAIR" science data platform, offering the infrastructures and interfaces necessary for the access to and use of data and computing resources of the involved communities and beyond.
The project “Quantum computer in the solid state” (QSolid) aims to create an all-German supply chain for quantum computing as a central building block of sustainable digital sovereignty for Germany.
In cooperation with the automotive industry: Testing artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to run on quantum computers.
The goal of the "Robotic AI" real laboratory at KIT is to make AI tangible for humans in diverse experiments and different real environments - from daycare centers and schools to museums, libraries, and hospitals.
SiVeGCS coordinates and ensures the availability of HPC resources of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing, addressing issues related to funding, operation, training, and user support across Germany's national HPC infrastructure.
The main goal of this priority program is to develop a comprehensive theoretical foundation of Deep Learning.
The aim of this project is to harness advances in information technology to compute and evaluate climate warming trajectories at unprecedented kilometer-scales, which enable the direct simulation of crucial processes in the climate system, like convective storms and ocean eddies.

International funding

AI4EOSC will deliver an enhanced set services for the development of AI, ML and DL models and applications in the EOSC.
interTwin is an EU-funded project with the goal to co-design and implement the prototype of an interdisciplinary Digital Twin Engine – an open source platform based on open standards that offers the capability to integrate with application-specific Digital Twins.
The project “DICE – Data Infrastructure Capacity for EOSC” aims to enable a European storage and data management infrastructure for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), providing generic services and building blocks to store, find, access and process data in a consistent and persistent way.
DEEP-SEA is building upon proven software packages to create an open-source environment optimally supporting heterogeneous and modular supercomputers, guided by codesign with applications from seven high-impact scientific fields.
EOSC Future is an EU-funded H2020 project that is implementing the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). EOSC will give European researchers access to a wide web of FAIR data and related services.
The European PILOT will deliver the first All-European open source and open standard based software and hardware integrated HPC system by creating an autonomous set of accelerators designed, implemented, manufactured, and deployed in Europe.
The EUPEX pilot brings together academic and commercial stakeholders to co-design a European modular Exascale-ready pilot system.
The European Processor Initiative (EPI) is a European processor project to design and build a new family of European low-power processors for supercomputers, Big Data, automotive, and offering high performance on traditional HPC applications and emerging applications such as on machine learning.
The Exascale Computing Project (ECP) is focused on accelerating the delivery of a capable exascale computing ecosystem that delivers 50 times more computational science and data analytic application power than possible.
HPCQS aims to develop a hybrid programming platform which allows to combine quantum simulations with classical high performance computing and thus accelerates the computing speed of classical supercomputers.
The Human Brain Project aims to put in place a cutting-edge research infrastructure that will allow scientific and industrial researchers to advance our knowledge in the fields of neuroscience, computing, and brain-related medicine with EBRAINS as a new digital research infrastructure that gathers an extensive range of data and tools for brain-related research.
The ICEI project plans to deliver a set of e-infrastructure services that will be federated to form the Fenix Infrastructure and is carried out by the leading European Supercomputing Centres BSC (Spain), CEA (France), CINECA (Italy), ETHZ-CSCS (Switzerland) and JUELICH-JSC (Germany).
irecs, a collaborative project funded by the European Union, aims to strengthen principles of research ethics in as many disciplines as possible. 17 partner organizations from Germany and abroad have joined forces to drive the project forward.
In RAISE, researchers from science and industry develop novel, scalable Artificial Intelligence technologies towards Exascale along representative use-cases from Engineering and Natural Sciences.
Sano is a new non profit research institute dedicated to the advancement of computational medicine, developing sophisticated computer methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, to meet the overarching worldwide need for efficient, effective and streamlined healthcare.
Skills4EOSC will set up a pan-European network of competence centres to speed up the training of European researchers and harmonise the training of new professional figures for scientific data management.
